Built for reading and writing
Edit the rendered page
Files open rendered and stay editable. Type into headings, lists and tables as they look; the formatting bar covers the rest.
Preview, Split or Edit
The rendered page, the source, or both side by side. Split view aligns the panes by block, not by percentage, so a long code fence never drifts.
Lock it for reading
One button makes the rendered page read-only. Scroll, select and follow links without changing a thing. The lock holds between launches.
Work in a folder
Open a folder and its Markdown files fill the sidebar. Filter, create, rename and delete in place; links between documents open in Rundown.
Mermaid diagrams
Write a mermaid code block and Rundown draws it. Zoom in to inspect. The source is saved exactly as written.
Appearance and themes
Light, Dark or System, plus two fixed themes: Harbor and Charcoal. ⌘+ and ⌘- scale text in both panes.
Your Markdown, left as you wrote it
Untouched blocks are saved byte for byte: spacing, list markers, heading style. Only the blocks you edit are regenerated.
Safe to open anything
Remote images never load, so opening a file tells no one you read it. Links to local files are revealed in the Finder, never launched.
Frequently asked questions
How do the three modes differ?
Preview shows the rendered page, edited in place. Split shows source and rendered side by side; you edit the source. Edit shows the source alone. Switch with the control in the toolbar, or ⇧⌘P.
Will editing the rendered page change my Markdown?
No. Rundown keeps the original text of every block. Untouched blocks are saved byte for byte; only edited blocks are regenerated.
Why does typing do nothing?
The page is locked. Click the lock button in the toolbar. The lock holds between launches by design.
Why are web images missing?
By design. Fetching a remote image tells its host you opened the document, so Rundown never fetches one. Local images, referenced relative to the document, display normally.
What happens when I click a link?
Web and email links open in your browser or mail app. Links to Markdown files in the open folder open in Rundown. Any other local file is revealed in the Finder, so a document cannot launch anything.
Does Rundown save automatically?
No. ⌘S saves. Rundown asks before discarding unsaved changes, whether you close a window, quit or switch files. Undo spans all three modes as one history.
Which Markdown does it support?
Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, images, bulleted, numbered and task lists, blockquotes, code blocks, tables, horizontal rules and Mermaid diagrams. Help ▸ Markdown Showcase shows them all.
What does it cost?
Free for 14 days, then a one-time unlock. No subscription. After the trial, documents still open and display, and work typed during it can still be saved; editing needs the unlock. Rundown ▸ Unlock Rundown… starts the trial, buys the unlock or restores a purchase.
Is there an account? Does it collect data?
Neither. No sign-up, analytics, advertising or tracking. Your documents stay where you put them, and nothing is sent to us.
Where are the keyboard shortcuts?
Help ▸ Rundown Help (⌘?). It covers every mode, the formatting bar and every shortcut.
What does it require?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Rundown opens .md and .markdown files.
